Week 3: Adjusting expectations

Adjusting Expectations

    Hello again, everyone!

Last week, I challenged myself to completely assemble the "Cadia Stands" army box kit for Warhammer 40,000 by Games Workshop. Unfortunately for me, building models becomes even more challenging when you are sick. Using delicate movements to assemble miniature soldiers is already a demanding task for someone like me, and doing so while my body has more Nyquil in it than blood is not an easy ask. Nevertheless, I made a small amount of progress towards my goal, and I believe I have more realistic expectations for this project

Opening the box for the kit, I began my usual process of laying out all the model sprues to get an idea of how much work I was getting myself into. The models I assemble are deceptively small, comprised of a large amount of tiny plastic pieces. Here is a picture of what my kit looks like fresh from the box, which will make around 30 models.

I decided to start with some of the bigger pieces of the model kit, assembling the artillery/gun crew. The two cannons consisted of 28 pieces each, not including two extra soldiers for each piece. In total, the Artillery models came out to around 90 pieces for assembly. The process consists of picking out specific pieces for my assembly option, cutting out the parts I needed with hobby cutters, filing down any mold lines with a sharp knife, then carefully pressing the pieces together with plastic glue. In all, the process for the guns took me about 5 hours.
Unfortunately, it was after assembling these models on Friday that I got sick, and could not complete more models over the weekend. However, I firmly believe that I should be able to finish the rest of the kit by next Wednesday. Once the building is done, I can begin the painting process, which leaves me with a question. I have no idea what color I want to paint these models, I usually prefer to paint with two solid colors as a scheme, However, I'd like to push myself with these models and make them a little more impressive. If anyone has a recommendation for a color scheme, let me know in the comments.

See you next Wednesday!

  1. I love the pictures, and I can totally see why this would take a bunch of time. The process of removing all the little pieces from the little plastic from alone... It seems like a fairly delicate task. Good luck!

  2. The process of getting every little piece off the sprue is quite a challenge. Worse still, I tend to drop the tiny pieces off my desk and on my carpet. Cue an extra five minutes of searching just to find a tiny arm or leg. Delicate indeed. -Matt B

  3. So. Many. Little. Pieces. Kudos for attempting this. It makes me sweat just thinking about it.
