Week 13: What is Warhammer?

 What is Warhammer?

Hello, Everyone!

It occurred to me this week that while my blog has mostly been about the models side of wargaming, I have never quite explained the premise of the particular wargame that I play. The vast majority of people reading this blog have never heard of Warhammer before, or have very little idea what the game is actually about. While the phrase "what is Warhammer" could make up a 3 hour conversation (believe me, I've tried,) I endeavor to explain it succinctly within the confines of a few paragraphs at most.

It is the 41st Millennium. For more than a hundred centuries, the Emperor of Mankind has sat immobile on the golden throne of Earth.  He is the carrion lord of the vast Imperium of Man, whom thousands are sacrificed every day, so that he may never truly die. Even in his deathless state, he continues his eternal vigilance over his realm. Mighty Battlefleets cross the stars in his name, their way lit by the Astronomican: the psychic manifestation of the Emperor's own will made reality, ferrying vast armies to rage on countless worlds.

His greatest soldiers, the Space Marines-- Bio-engineered super soldiers-- lead his forces on titanic crusades. The innumerable Imperial Guard, the ever-vigilant Inquisition, and the Tech Priests of the Adeptus Mechanicus make up the bulk of the Imperium's forces. Every day millions die in the name of the Emperor, only to be replaced by the next so the grinding cycle of war may continue ever onward.

Even for all their multitude, they are barely enough to hold off that which threatens the Empire. Be it Alien, Mutant, Heretic, or far, far worse. To be alive in such times is to be one among endless many. It is to live in one of the most brutal regimes imaginable. Warhammer is the story of those times.

To close my introduction, I will end with a quote that prefaces nearly every single Warhammer book; "Forget the power of technology and science, for so much been forgotten, and will never be relearned. Forget the promise of progress and understanding. In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there is only War. There is no peace amongst the stars, only an eternity of slaughter and carnage; and the laughter of thirsting gods."
